Lugnuts rally past Whitecaps, 4-3
LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (21-8) smacked three run-scoring doubles to come from behind twice and edge the West Michigan Whitecaps (14-16), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts have defeated their intrastate rivals in five of their six meetings this season.
Dean Green’s sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, gave the Whitecaps a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, but Lansing catcher Carlos Perez quickly tied the game in the home half with an RBI double. Red-hot Andy Burns followed with an RBI double of his own off Tim Kelley (Loss, 0-4), putting the Lugs on top for good.
The rally made a winner of Lugnuts starter Jesse Hernandez (Win, 3-1), who allowed three runs on five hits over six innings, walking a season-high three against one strikeout.
Javier Avendano tossed a pair of scoreless, hitless innings out of the bullpen before Ajay Meyer picked up his Midwest League-leading twelfth save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.
An early 1-0 West Michigan lead was erased in the third inning by a Markus Brisker two-run double. It was Brisker’s second straight game with a key RBI two-bagger.
The third game of the four-game set is for scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Monday night on Jackson Field, with Lugnuts prospect Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 1.53), starting opposite the Whitecaps’ Wilsen Palacios (1-2, 4.76).
