Lugnuts stay cool, top Hot Rods, 8-3
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. – Andy Burns blasted a three-run homer in a five-run third inning to propel the Lansing Lugnuts to an 8-3 series-opening victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on a sweltering Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
With the temperature over 100 degrees, the Lugnuts sent ten batters to the plate in the third inning to send Hot Rods’ starter Parker Markel (Loss, 2-5) to the showers.
That was plenty of offense for Lugnuts starter Noah Syndergaard (Win, 4-2), who allowed just one run over five innings while striking out six and walking two.
Phil Brua (Save, 1) tossed the final four innings out of the bullpen in his Lugnuts debut. The sidearming right-hander allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four.
The Lugnuts offense posted 13 hits and all nine starters reached base at least once. Kevin Pillar was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, a double, an RBI and a stolen base; Chris Hawkins broke out of an 0-for-19 slump with two hits in four at-bats with an RBI and a run scored; and Kevin Patterson went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. The second game of the three-game series begins at 8:05 p.m. ET on June 29th. Lansing sends Anthony DeSclafani (6-1, 2.72) to the mound opposite Hot Rods righty Roberto Gomez (7-2, 2.67).
Lansing will return home on Wednesday, July 4th for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Great Lakes Loons. The opener of a three-game homestand will feature LAFCU Fireworks. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500 .
