Goeddel, Hot Rods hold off Lugnuts, 4-3
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. – Trailing at one point by four runs, the Lansing Lugnuts (4-5, 51-27) crept to within a run before stranding the potential tying run at second base in the 4-3 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (5-4, 43-36) on Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Jon Berti (2-for-4, two RBI) drove in pinch-hitter Andy Fermin in the ninth inning off Austin Hubbard (Save, 9). Fermin however was stranded in scoring position when Kenny Wilson was thrown out at first base on a fine play by the Hot Rods’ second baseman Juniel Querecuto.
The Lugs were unable to overcome the Hot Rods four-run third inning, climaxed by a Tyler Goeddel three-run homer off Lugs starter Justin Nicolino (Loss, 3-1).
The left-handed starter recovered to strike out four, walked one and surrendered seven hits over five innings of work.
Lansing slowly chipped away after falling behind 4-0. K.C. Hobson mashed an RBI double off the top of the wall against righty Andrew Bellatti (Win, 2-2) who tossed three innings as the first Hot Rod out of the bullpen.
In the seventh, Berti smacked an RBI single off Charlie Cononie to score Gustavo Pierre (2-for-4).
Felipe Rivero started for Bowling Green and worked three scoreless innings, giving up three hits, walking none and striking out four.
Lansing tied a season high with four errors in the game which led to one unearned run. The Lugs are now two and four on their current road trip and have lost three consecutive series to the Hot Rods.
The Lugnuts head to South Bend for the final leg of their season-long nine-game road trip. The opener of the three-game series is at 7:35 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 1st. Aaron Sanchez (6-0, 0.69) starts for the Lugs on his 20th birthday, opposed by the Silver Hawks’ touted Archie Bradley (7-4, 3.79).Lansing will return home on Wednesday, July 4th for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Great Lakes Loons.
