South Bend, Ind. – The Lansing Lugnuts and South Bend Silver Hawks split a pair of matchups Thursday evening, as Lansing took the completion of Wednesday night's suspended game 6-2 before dropping the nightcap to the Silver Hawks 4-0.
Game one resumed in the fourth inning with the Lugnuts leading 4-0.
South Bend cut the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Ramon Ramirez's RBI groundout with the bases loaded scored Derrick Walker.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth inning before Lansing added another in the ninth on Manny Rodriguez's RBI double that pushed the score to 6-2.
Edgar Estanga (9-1) picked up the win in relief for Lansing as he began the game on the mound when it resumed. He hurled three innings and gave up one run on four hits. Estanga is now tied for second in the league in wins despite making all of his appearances out of the bullpen.
Bryan Henry (1-5) took the loss for the Hawks. He gave up four runs the previous night before the game was suspended, but was stuck with the loss.
South Bend's Jarrod Parker dominated game two, leading his club to a 4-0 win over Lansing. It marks just the second time in 15 contests this season that the Hawks have beaten the Lugnuts.
Parker (7-3) got the win for the Silver Hawks after hurling six strong innings. He gave up just three hits, all singles, and fanned seven in the outing. He also only allowed two runners to reach scoring position against him in the game, and neither man made it past second base.
South Bend got on the board early by taking advantage of a wild Trystan Magnuson (0-8), who took the loss for the Lugnuts. Magnuson walked the first batter of the game and plunked the second. Mike Mee's infield single loaded the bases with no men out.
Two batters later, Sean Coughlin was hit by a pitch that pushed Jo Jo Batten across the plate to make it 1-0. Konrad Schmidt grounded into a double play, limiting the damage in the inning to just one run.
The Hawks plated two more in the fourth to open up a 3-0 lead. Walker started the inning with a single and moved to third on Schmidt's check-swing double into right field. Chance Wheeless then lifted a sacrifice fly that made it 2-0, and Eli Runler followed with an RBI single that capped off the inning.
The inning also finished Magnuson's night. He gave up three runs on four hits in four frames.
South Bend got its final run in the next frame when Taylor Harbin blasteed a solo homer just over the left field wall.
Lansing (49-36, 10-5) and South Bend (43-41, 10-5) will conclude the series Friday night. Luis Perez
(3-5, 3.24) will make the Independence Day start for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by former Central Michigan hurler Josh Collmenter (8-4, 3.53). First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
